Removing fly ash from heat exchanger harp elements – High-frequency impactors support cleaning and maintain heat transfer in the CHP plant

During the combustion of biomass, fly ash is generated and deposits on the harp elements of the heat exchanger. The deposits have an insulating effect and impair heat transfer. Regular cleaning is therefore essential to maintain heat transfer and reduce additional cleaning effort.

  • Fly ash deposits on the heat exchanger harp elements
  • The insulating deposits impair heat transfer
  • The necessary manual cleaning causes time and personnel expenditure
  • Shutdowns for cleaning can impair plant availability
Our solution

An operator of a biomass-fired CHP plant uses a pneumatically operated NHK high-frequency impactor from NetterVibration to clean the heat exchanger. The NHK is installed directly on the heat exchanger and generates high-frequency vibrations and impact pulses that can loosen adhering fly ash from the harp elements.

The operating principle of the NHK can be adapted to the respective application. Depending on the setting, the device can vibrate, impact or combine both operating modes. The impact frequency can be continuously adjusted via the pressure. The NHK operates with many lighter impacts per second instead of individual powerful impacts.

For this specific application, the NHK was adapted to the conditions at the heat exchanger in consultation with a local application engineer.

Our advantages
  • The fly ash is continuously or intermittently removed
  • Improved heat transfer and more stable process efficiency
  • Higher plant availability and longer operating periods
  • Protection of the plant technology through controlled vibration
